In Search of Virtue in Honors Of the three forms of friendship discussed by Aristotle—the useful, the pleasant, and the good—the ideal seminar most resembles the perfectly good friendship between â€Å"good men who are alike in excellence or virtue† (Aristotle 1156b). A seminar, the Swarthmore website reads, unites faculty with â€Å"small groups of dedicated and accomplished students† committed to â€Å"independent learning† and â€Å"dialogue with peers, teachers, and examiners.† In light of Aristotelian and neo-Aristotelian thought on friendship, virtue and practical wisdom, this discussion will first examine how an ideal seminar promotes student virtues and then proceed to evaluate an e-mail I wrote in response to an imperfect seminar. At Swarthmore, the honors program makes implicit use of role models. In seminar, seniors initially set the tone for juniors to follow. Honors seminars also provide a forum for â€Å"moral self-examination† (Thomas 140) which encourages deliberation among equals. Seminars allow a degree of academic intimacy and debate which is unavailable in a lecture hall. In Living Morally, Laurence Thomas writes that â€Å"Not infrequently†¦self-examination requires a dialogue† (140). In the Ethics, Aristotle highlights the importance of deliberation in proceeding with practical wisdom: â€Å"When great issues are at stake, we distrust our own abilities as insufficient to decide the matter and call in others to join us in our deliberation† (Aristotle 1112b). Successful deliberation, then, often requires the union of various perspectives. In my experience, the wisdom of groups of people outpaces the ability of an individual. The Apache Creation Story is a reliving of the creation that takes on a more personal, familial and dialogue-based approach to how the world and mankind came to be. The story depicts how the natural environment was created, from the earth itself to the four cardinal points to the clouds, the animals, and the trees. Because of the nature of the Apache’s nomadic life, the legend remains generalized in terms of its location. Typically the story is told in order to preserve their tribal history as well as social and instructional purposes. These occasions range from the campfire to rites of passage to simply a parent teaching their child of their historical identity. The legend of creation is central to the spiritual practices and beliefs of the Apache, especially when it comes to their relationship with the natural world. It brings up the question, how is our behaviour shaped, and the two sides of the answer are nature and nurture. Behaviour in the context of a human being can be described as; the way humans act and think in situations. What is meant by nature and nurture? Nature is the word used to describe the biological aspects that shape behaviour, for example genes. In this movie, Benjamin Martin, played by Mel Gibson, was a retired British officer and a widower raising seven of his children in his farm.   He held his principles steadfastly, which focused almost on his family and his interest in making rocking chairs which he never perfected.   Thus, he did not want to join the war against the British. Benjamin, who knew from first‑hand experience the horrifying carnage that war would present, discouraged his son from participating but Gabriel was determined to fight.   Times passed, many towns fell to the British including their hometown. Gabriel returned home after two years, stumbling wounded into the family home. That night, a battle between the British and patriots happened. They helped the wounded from both sides. The Green Dragoons arrived and killed all the wounded Colonial soldiers. The leader, Col. William Tavington, shot his son, Thomas, who was trying to free his brother Gabriel which was being captured. This brought an enraged Benjamin to free his son Gabriel, with the help of his two younger sons.   He left the rest of the children in the care of their aunt Charlotte, the sister of his deceased wife.   The three of them killed the British troops holding Gabriel by ambushing them.   While their brother was freed, his sons saw their father brutally killing men.   He was called The Ghost by the British army because of his techniques and skills in ambushing.   However, the Green Dragoons were still determined to go after   Benjamin’s loved-ones that it led them to burn the house of his sister-in law, but eventually they escaped with the help of Benjamin. He was then driven to lead the Colonial Militia, planning for strategies and getting involved in the actual fight to win over the seemingly formidable British Army.   One of these strategies was to capture a supply line of General Cornwallis, ransacking all the food and comforts, including two Great Dane dogs of the general. He even tamed the dogs by taking care of them, making these dogs shift loyalties. This made Cornwallis angry. Cornwallis made a plan to trap the men of The Ghost and eventually succeeded. The British captured 18 of his men. Benjamin then concocted a plan of deceiving General Cornwallis, making him believe that he also captured 18 officers, including a colonel who called him a cheeky fellow. He freed his men successfully with this strategy.   In war, deception is one of the strategies to win over the enemies and this was shown in this part of the movie. While at war under his father’s command, Gabriel married a lady from a town.   However, someone led the Green Dragoons to the town where Gabriel’s wife lived and they eventually killed all the townsmen by burning them inside a church. This brought Gabriel to avenge the death of his wife, but he was also killed in the process and his father was greatly saddened of this and swore to kill the leader of the Green Dragoons. When an all-out battle commenced against the Redcoats, the strategy was to put the Colonial Militia under the command of Benjamin in front to show the high morale of   the army to the enemy, but actually the main army of Colonial Militia was in the rear. So, when the Colonial Militia was called to retreat, the Redcoats were surprised by the main army of the Colonials and thus were defeated.   Eventually, Benjamin was given the opportunity to kill his nemesis, Tavington, who killed his two sons, hurting himself in the process.   In the end, Cornwallis and the British army were pushed to their last base.   Cornwallis was forced to surrender because the French army arrived, putting him into the shame of defeat. Benjamin never perfected the art of making rocking chairs but this showed his dogged determination to finish a task no matter how many times he failed.   That same intensity of avenging the death of his loved-ones was shown in the battlefield, making him a hero, a real patriot. In this essay, I will try to detail some of the most important arguments that globalization advocates should know. Globalization is the movement from a strictly domestic marketplace to a marketplace where international goods are allowed to flow into foreign countries. Also, domestic firms will be motivated to move their operations to foreign countries where production will be cheaper and; therefore, more productive. Basically, the argument is whether or not international trade is a good or bad thing for the world economy. In other words, will the movement of goods produced in one country to another country to be sold be of benefit to all countries involved? Advocates of globalization argue that international trade is not only good for the world economy, but is absolutely essential for the survival of it. The first thing that advocates of globalization may argue is that advancements in technology make it ever more possible to conduct international business cheaper and quicker than ever. No longer is international trade conducted by transport on sailboats that may take weeks to reach their destination. Today business transactions are conducted over the internet. Also, shipping is done in more productive ways such as by air. These lower transaction costs make globalization a more feasible idea than in years past. Advocates argue that globalization and international trade force firms to become more competitive. For example, Madagascar can produce textiles cheaper than American textile factories can. This will force American textile firms to become more productive or be forced out of the market. To do this, the American firms may choose to add to their capital stock. This will mechanize the production of textiles, which will drive down the cost of labor. A good case for this argument is made in the article: Socks Are Odd: Made in America. The article claims that the production of socks by American producers is able to remain competitive because of the automation of the production process. Labor makes up perhaps 20%, maybe a bit more, of costs, he estimates. That limits the savings from going abroad for lower wages. Globalization advocacy has also been bolstered by the liberalization of international trade barriers. The formation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) has helped to lower tariffs from the high double digits in the immediate postwar era to around 5% at the turn of the century. Therefore, if American citizens are able to buy foreign products for less money than domestic products because of reduced tariffs, then Americans will be better off. A good example of how reduced tariffs have helped the global economy is seen in the steel industry. In recent years, steel imports into the United States have increased heavily. One of the reasons for this is that the tariffs have been lowered significantly. Globalization opponents argue that this hurts the American steel industry because it cannot compete with the countries that are able to produce steel cheaper than domestic firms. Advocates counter by claiming that importing cheaper steel is good for America because citizens save money by buying the foreign steel.
